Second Amendment

We will only need them when government tries to take them

I am an ardent supporter of the Second Amendment as the right was intended by our founders. We have to find solutions as a society to shootings in our schools, malls, and movie theaters, but those are signs of deeper and different societal ills. These things need to continue to be studied, and efforts to increase our security need to be made, but I do not believe that guns are the problem and I do not believe that more gun control is the solution. My view reflects the view of our first President, George Washington:

Firearms stand next in importance to the constitution itself. They are the American people’s liberty teeth and keystone under independence … from the hour the Pilgrims landed to the present day, events, occurences and tendencies prove that to ensure peace security and happiness, the rifle and pistol are equally indispensable … the very atmosphere of firearms anywhere restrains evil interference — they deserve a place of honor with all that’s good.
