Penn State, Kids for Cash and Tom Corbett
There is nothing more troubling to us as Pennsylvanians than the destruction heaped upon our great Commonwealth by the Jerry Sandusky scandal at Penn State University and the kids-for-cash scandal that rocked Luzerne County. These scandals ruined the lives of children, tore families apart, and left a humiliating, permanent smear on these lands founded by William Penn over 300 years ago.
The Judges have been jailed, the monster has been put away for life, but the tragic effect these debacles have had on our Commonwealth have not yet been resolved, and complete justice has not been done. The Louis Freeh report, which I call the “Louis Fraud report” was nothing but a cover for the real institutional problems at the heart of the Penn State/Sandusky scandal. As your Congressman, I will fight to get complete justice, and to restore the lives and reputations, including the legacy of Joe Paterno, that have been ruined.
As Attorney General, Tom Corbett knew of what was going on at Penn State, and could have initiated investigative proceedings much sooner than he did, potentially saving many lives and reputations, and avoid the shame and humiliation that this scandal has been for our entire Commonwealth.
The same can be said for the kids-for-cash scandal. Judges, lawyers, and state and federal law enforcement authorities had information about the goings-on in the Luzerne County, and in other courts across the state. For nothing other than chrony, “good old boy” reasons, however, these things were swept under the table, and hidden until the problems progressed to such lengths that they could no longer be covered up. Conahan and Ciavarella were properly and justly prosecuted, but the problem always went much deeper than those two black robe-wearing criminals, and to the institutional reasons why something as tragic as this could have happened in the first place.
As your Congressman, I will not stop looking into these issues until all Pennsylvanians have complete satisfaction that all of the institutional reasons these things are allowed to happen are addressed, all of the persons responsible are brought to justice, and all of our lost Pennsylvania pride is restored.
